Tennis (Boys)

The Mustangs, a member of Class 4A, remain as legitimate competitors in the 5A-dominated Centennial League, continuing to go against the best there is in the Rocky Mountains. Runners-up in the Colorado 4A Tournament in two of the past three seasons, the Mustangs in 2022 return eight players with considerable experience and are confident they can challenge again. The 2022 regular season will feature 12 matches, including tournaments, and run into late September. Additionally, there is an ace of a change concerning crowning a team champion – instead of pulling points from the tournament brackets for the three singles and four doubles spots, new head coach Jeff Lepley calls it a “March Madness-type of bracket” that will be wrapped around regionals and state with higher seeds. The move puts Colorado more in line nationally. The Mustangs will host regionals (to be completed by Oct. 8) and the Colorado tournament, as usual, will be in Pueblo, Oct. Oct. 13-15. The first round of the new team format will be Sept. 27, the second on Sept. 29 and the finals are scheduled to be completed by Oct. 18.

  • Ethan Saloom Joins Sports Performance

by: Hank Hooper, Associate Athletic Director
The introduction is overdue, but for the past 50+ days, Ethan Saloom has been pushing our kids to get better. Ethan was hired as an assistant Sports Performance coach, and he brings a world of ‘smarts’ with him. Once destined to become a mechanical engineer, it just didn’t feel right, so the path was changed. His love of sports was too strong, and that field of endeavor in some capacity was calling. He was sure his degree in exercise science would lead him to physical therapy, but COVID created an alternate path. The pandemic slowed everything and everyone down for a time, and it allowed Ethan to really eyeball his future and find an answer to the question of what he was going to do with his degree. He decided on building something – Athletes.

  • Nine Make Their Decisions Official

by: Hank Hooper, Associate Athletic Director
Nine senior Mullen athletes put pen to paper and officially declared their athletic residency for the next four years of their lives.  November 8th was the declared date for senior athletes from all across the county to declare their intent (with the exception of football) to play their sport at a college or university at the onset of a new fall, and at a 12:45 PM ceremony in the newly constructed Student Life Center in the Sferra Center on the Mullen campus, that is exactly what these nine Mustangs did.

    A Preseason Look

Tennis just keeps on rocking.  Always the front-runners when Regionals roll around, expected deep runs at the individual tournament in Pueblo, and with the new Team Championship playoff, its triple the fun for those who follow closely the Mustang netters.  Have expectations lessened as tennis ramps up this week and builds to a championship crescendo come October?  Nope.  Not a bit.  The Mullen boys’ tennis team is expected to be in the thick of things, as always, and the players know in their hearts that to be true and are working to make it a reality.  That is why the turnout for summer OTAs was so well attended throughout June and July.  The hunger is there.  That is part of the battle.  The other part is believing you are good enough.  This writer doubts these Mustangs lack any confidence that their season will end in any way but ultimate accomplishment with the hardware to prove it.
